I hold a PhD and MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and a BA in Anthropology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, awarded with a First Class Joint Honours at McGill University.
Prior to coming to Laurier in January 2014, I held Postdoctoral Fellowships in Anthropology at the University of Toronto and at the University of São Paulo. My fellowships were funded, respectively, by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).
My teaching has been shaped by my experience in the UK and Canada: I have previously held teaching appointments at the University of Cambridge, the University of Liverpool, Trent University and the University of Toronto.
I am currently completing a monograph, The Mystic of Friendship in Settler Amazonia, which explores the mystic relational dynamics that have animated the resettlement and politics of Southeast Amazonia since the late twentieth century. The book extends work that has appeared in venues including Current Anthropology (see especially the Reply: “Politics and the Mystic of Friendship”), Anthropological Theory, The Journal of the American Academy of Religion, The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, L'Homme, Religion and Society, and the volume Redescribing Relations: Strathernian Conversations on Ethnography, Knowledge and Politics, which I edited in honour of Marilyn Strathern and her interlocutors.
I have recently been awarded an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The research will document the reconsolidation of Brazil’s National Museum in the 19th and 21st centuries, and will focus especially on the religious and secular knowledge practices that have shaped these two historical moments.

Although my regional specialty lies in Latin America, I welcome working with students interested in Christianity, secularity, African diaspora religions, and politics globally from ethnographic and historical perspectives.
