I received my PhD in French Studies from Western University in 2009 and my MA in French from the same institution in 2004.
Prior to joining Laurier, I was a lecturer in the Department of French Studies at Western University, and I also worked as a research assistant for Alain Goldschläger (awarded the Order of Academic Palms, 2013), director of The Holocaust Literature Research Institute at Western University.
One focus of my research has been looking into what makes “migrant writing” (écriture migrante) a genre in itself, with its own specific literary features, and asserting that it is not a mere literary trend associated with the author’s immigration circumstances. Furthermore, since the publication of my monograph on this topic the genre has evolved, so I am following écriture transmigrante as well, bearing in mind Margaret Atwood’s assertion that Canadian literature is not equivalent with Canadian content, or that Canadian content remains to be defined considering its colonial past and immigration present.
As my domains of expertise are closely related to the immigration phenomenon and migrants’ literary representations I have been working on projects which focus on current social and political events both in Europe and in North-America, specifically what is known in the media as the immigration or the refugees’ crisis, and the failure of the multiculturalist model. My analysis range from going beyond the existing paradigms of Americanness (américanité) and Amerilatinity (amérilatinité) which only function in opposition to each other, to working on representations of the “migration crisis” in comics journalism”.
More recently I have also made use of Dominique Viart’s concept of “field literature” in order to examine the auctorial authority derived from the subject’s relationship with reality in novels by Québec writer Alain Beaulieu and Andrée A. Michaud and plan to expand on this adding to the corpus.
