For many, retirement marks a new chapter filled with possibilities. For Susan Dietrich, a proud Laurier alumna from the Class of ’89, it brought her back to a place she had always cherished—making music at Wilfrid Laurier University. As she transitioned into retirement, an email invitation opened the door to a remarkable opportunity: joining the Laurier Concert Choir.
Directed by fellow alumna Carolyn Neumann VanderBurgh, the Laurier Concert Choir is a vibrant ensemble that brings together university students, community members of all ages, and Laurier alumni for a unique and enriching choral experience, where musical growth is enhanced by the diverse life experiences of its members, fostering a deeper and richer understanding of music.
“I had just retired, which finally gave me the time to pursue this,” Susan shared. “Despite the two-hour drive each way from my home in Grey County, the vested time dedicated to this pursuit is worth it.”
Returning to Laurier has been more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It’s been a revitalizing experience that reignited her lifelong passion for singing. "The joy of being back at Laurier and singing in a choir again was exhilarating," she said. "It brought back all those memories of my days as a music student, and being in the Laurier Concert Choir now, with a mix of students and adults, truly emphasizes how universal, inclusive, and empowering music is."
The energy and inspiration she draws from the choir have recharged her enthusiasm for music. “Singing with the Laurier Concert Choir has energized me even more than before. I would recommend it to former music students. It’s a great way to keep pushing ourselves to new levels.”
For Susan, the Laurier Concert Choir isn’t just a weekly rehearsal; it’s a connection to her past, a commitment to her present growth, and a bridge to her future in music. Her story is a testament to the lasting impact of a Laurier education and the endless possibilities that come with staying engaged in the arts.
If you’re considering joining the Laurier Concert Choir, Susan’s message is clear: “Do it. It’s an experience you won’t regret.”
