The MHCR Train-the-trainer (MHCR-T3) program will train officers or professionals from police services across Ontario to be qualified to provide the MHCR program and to administer the MHCR In-service Requalification Requirements. This 6-unit course provides 33 hours of instruction and assessment to future MHCR instructors to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to implement the MHCR program at the police service level. The MHCR-T3 program will be offered multiple times per year (i.e., 8 in year 1, 5 in year 2) in class sizes of 20-25 based on MHCR trainer availability and gathered information about police service training schedules. Once registered in the program, future MHCR facilitators will be enrolled in the online T3 unit two weeks before the in-person event. Future MHCR facilitators will be responsible for completing the first three units before arriving at the in-person event. By delivering the MHCR-T3 program in a hybrid format, in which instruction and introduction to the MHCR materials are initially provided online, the in-person lessons can focus on demonstration, hands-on learning, and rehearsal with constructive feedback from an MHCR Trainer.
Upon successful completion of the MHCR-T3 program (outlined below), participants will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by the Centre for Public Safety and Well-Being (CPSW) at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU). Anyone providing the MHCR Education and Applied Training Program at an Ontario police service to train and evaluate sworn officers in compliance with regulatory requirements as stated in the O Reg 87/24) will be required to have this qualification.
Required Modules
The T3 program requires the successful completion of the following modules.
An introduction to the MHCR program highlighting community co-development and pedagogical features of the training program.
- Duration: 30 minutes
Completion of four online lessons that learners go through before attending the in-person training components (i.e., forum and evaluation scenarios).
- Duration: 4 hours, 40 minutes (60 minutes instruction/module and 10 quiz/module)
Overviews each DePICT™ competency, how to score and use the tool to evaluate learners’ performance during assessment scenarios, and how to use it to guide targeted learner feedback.
- Duration: 75 minutes (45 minutes instruction and 20 minutes practice activity)
An overview of the forum method and demonstration of implementation, including the springboard scenario, discussion and implementation of alternative de-escalation strategies based on DePICT™ competencies, and delivery of subject matter expert materials.
- Duration: 125 minutes
An overview of the evaluation method and demonstration of implementation, including evaluation and feedback for the learner using the DePICT™ tool.
- Duration: 90 minutes
Considerations for implementing the MHCR at the police service-level, including selecting a modality for implementation (e.g., live actor or virtual reality) and creating positive conditions for learners.
- Duration: 45 minutes
T3 Refresher Course Framework (MHCR-T3R)
Certified MHCR instructors are required to be re-credentialed every three years. This entire course will be provided asynchronously online with rolling registration through the Centre for Public Safety and Well-Being to suit learners’ schedules.
The T3R will ensure that MHCR facilitators continue to implement new scenarios with high fidelity and promote generalization of skills to newly available forum and evaluation scenarios. Upon successfully completing the MHCR T3 Refresher Course, the MHCR facilitator will be issued a new certificate of completion with a new expiration date.
